LIMA – The culinary, graphic design and marketing programs at Lima Senior High School are working together to plan a benefit dinner for a graduate severely injured in a swimming accident.
Austin Beggin, a 2011 LSH graduate, broke his C3 and C4 vertebrae and damaged his spine swimming in the ocean on a family vacation. The accident happened just three weeks after graduating from The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. Some did not think Austin would survive, but he continues to improve, with hopes of walking again.
The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, before the boys home basketball game against Toledo St. Francis. The night is a triple header with freshman, JV and varsity games. Game times are 4:45 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The dinner, available for dine-in or carry out, will be in the Lima Senior Cafeteria/Commons area.
Adult meals will be $7 and children 10 and under $5. The dinner will include pasta and meatballs, salad, breadsticks, dessert (Sara’s Sweets) and beverages.
Students are also selling “Austin’s Army” t-shirts, created by graphic design students. The cost is $12. To order meals or t-shirts, email to email@example.com or call 419-308-1188. Walk-up meals and shirts will be on a limited, first-come, first-served basis. It is best to order ahead of time.
All proceeds will go to the Beggin family to cover the on-going costs of Austin’s rehab. Austin was at the Chicago Institute of Rehabilitation for many weeks, returning to Lima in November. He travels three times a week to Columbus for intensive rehab/therapy sessions. He has been accepted into two different case study programs, one for his arms and another for his legs.
