LIMA – Johnny Thi starting working in the nail and beauty industry while living in 16 years ago while living in a bigger city. There he found many high end and luxurious spas. After living and working in Lima for 11 years at his original Ivy Nail Spa, located at 1515 Harding Highway., Thi decided to expand and wanted to bring that big city feel to Lima. He decided to open a second location, 2909 Elida Road, with a goal of providing luxury services to residents.
“We wanted to make it really nice, luxury, because we (didn’t) have one in Lima,” Thi said. “I’ve lived in bigger cities all my life, (and) sometimes I travel to Texas, where I came from, or sometimes Washington D.C., we lived there before, and we saw people (with) big, nice salons and that’s what we wanted to do here in Lima.”
The new location is much more spa focused. There are 10 different pedicures to choose from, from the $90 King Highness which includes a foot soak and sugar scrub exfoliation, hot stone massage, and butter massage cream, finished with a shellac gel polish, to a classic pedicure for $30, which includes nail shaping, foot massage, and polish. Manicures and acrylic nails are available, including SNS nails, also called dipping powder gel, a natural and organic choice that no one else in Lima carries, and solar nails, which look natural and resist discoloration from the sun.
Ivy Nail Spa also provides waxing, eyelash extensions, and body massages. The manicure and pedicure stations are in separate spaces and there are private booths for massages. The pedicure chairs feature built in massage chairs.
Keeping up with technology and trends is important to Thi; he travels to nail shows in Chicago and Las Vegas to learn about new products and bring them to Lima.
“Maybe next year they bring out a new products, so we got to keep up with it,” he said.
While people may dish out lots of money in bigger city for a spa experience, Thi said he tries to service everyone, offering different levels of service and prices for those who may be on a budget.
“We do about 10 different pedicures … just to give people an option, all different levels,” he said. While some patrons may be on a budget Thi said they can still enjoy themselves.
The new location offers more space, at nearly 4,000 square feet, plenty of room for wedding parties, or any other large groups, Thi said. Most nail salons have only six or eight pedicure stations, and Ivy Nail Spa has 21 chairs.
“I hope people here in Lima can enjoy it, so they can come here and have a good time,” Thi said.
Thi has completely renovated the building, which was formerly an animal hospital. Walls were torn down, new tile laid, and the whole space is newly designed. The outside of the building is the last thing to be completed, and should be done by the end of the week, as long as there is no more rain, Thi said.
While the new business has just gotten started Thi said there is opportunity for growth.
