LIMA – The Lima City Schools is partnering with Fight Like A Redhead to help support and raise money for a Lima Senior High School student diagnosed with cancer.
Robert Thomas, a freshman at Lima Senior, has Mature T Lymphoma. While he is back in Lima now, he had spent several months in a hospital in Columbus. His mother was on unpaid leave from work to be with Robert. It has been a great financial burden for the family.
Lima Senior will dedicate its Jan 22 home basketball game against Toledo St. John’s to Robert. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
“Runnin’ With Robert” t-shirts are currently for sale. The cost is $10 for students if purchased ahead of time and $15 for adults. They will also be available at the game for $15. Orders can be submitted by calling 419-996-3473.
If able, Robert will be at the game and be the Special Spartan. He will wear the Spartan armor and be carried around the gym before the game begins. The Special Spartan is a 50-plus year tradition at Lima Senior. There will be a presentation to his family at halftime.
There will be several other ways people can support Robert throughout the game.
- 50-50 raffle. Proceeds that typically go to the Athletic Boosters will go to Robert and his family.
- Raffle to win 43-inch Smart Television. Tickets cost $5.
- Three-point game. Pay $1 to make a three-point shot; get $2 if you make it. Will be done during halftime.
Lima Senior and other students from around the district have already been raising money for the family. They have also sent letters of encouragement to Robert and some high school students have talked to him through video technology.
Fight Like A Redhead, a local nonprofit organization, will also hold a benefit for the family from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Labor Union Hall, 4580 S. Dixie Highway.
The event will include food, drinks, DJ, 50/50, raffles, silent auction, live auction, bake sale and much more.
