Obesity: What is it?
Obesity is simply defined as excess adipose (fat) tissue in the body. There are several methods to determine obesity, but the most well-known is the assessment of a person’s BMI (Body Mass Index). This is a calculation that uses someone’s height and weight to determine what their BMI is and this number will place them in a category ranging from underweight to extreme obesity. Any BMI above 30 is considered obese. Due to the fact that only height and weight are used in this calculation, there is the possibility that this number is misleading, especially in very muscular persons or pregnant women. Obesity is a chronic disease and the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, disability, healthcare utilization and healthcare costs in the United States. The high prevalence of obesity continues to be a large strain to the United States healthcare system.
What group/populations are most affected?
Across the United States, obesity is a concern. Across the county, more than one-third of adults are obese according to recent data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity affects some groups more than others. Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (47.8%) followed by Hispanics (42.5%), non-Hispanic whites (32.6%), and non-Hispanic Asians (10.8%). Obesity is higher among middle age adults, 40-59 years old (39.5%) than among younger adults, age 20-39 (30.3%) or adults over 60 or above (35.4%) adults. Here in Allen County, 2014 data shows that 33% of our residents are obese, compared with 30% across the state of Ohio. We have seen a decrease in our obesity rate here in Allen County, but there is still plenty of work to be done.
