Did you know that Allen County conducts a county-wide Health and Community Needs assessment every five years? This assessment collects data from both adult and youth residents throughout the county regarding their health behaviors and risks. The most recent assessment was conducted in 2014 and the findings were released in April 2015. Today we’d like to take a look at the percentage of adults who are overweight and obese (aka adult weight status) here in Allen County.
Adult Weight Status in Allen County
- Overweight: 36%
- Obese: 41%
- Overweight: 34%
- Obese: 33%
While from 2009 to 2014 both the percentage of overweight and obese adults decreased, there is room for improvement. When comparing the 77% of adults who were overweight or obese in 2009 to the 67% in 2014, one can see that improvement is significant. The Lima Family YMCA and Activate Allen County, through funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are working alongside businesses, government agencies and non-profit partners to improve the health of adults and to decrease the percentage of overweight and obese adults in our region. No one person/group made this improvement, there are countless people, organizations and groups that have contributed to the improvement in adult weight status.
