LIMA — The community is invited to give blood in honor of 11-year-old Lauren Cunningham and other children battling cancer at a special blood drive held in her name on Thursday, June 23, at Allen Co. Childrens Services.

Three previous blood drives have been held in Lauren’s honor. In total those drives brought in 185 blood donations. With a goal of 60 donations, the June 23 blood drive could result in a total of more than 200 blood donations being given in honor of Lauren and other children with illnesses.

Lauren was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. Since then she has received more than 80 blood transfusions during her treatment. She may need more transfusions in the future to help her continue to battle with leukemia.

A student at Bath Elementary School, Lauren is involved in dance, softball and soccer. She also attends Bath Community Church and enjoys hunting with her father. All these activities would no longer be possible for her if not for the generous blood donors who have helped her continue to live through her treatments.

“We have been thrilled to see so many people giving in Lauren’s name, and would love to see anyone willing to come and donate blood at this special drive,” said Mariah Cunningham, Lauren’s mother.

Blood and platelet donations are needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood.

To learn more about blood donation, including information about eligibility to donate, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). If you were deferred from donating in the past, you may be able to donate again.
