As we enter into a new year, it is time to set goals and build on the foundation that was set during the last couple years as we continue to work as a community to improve the health and wellness of our residents. The Lima Family YMCA was awarded a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2014 titled Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH) Grant. As the grant is now in its second year, we wanted to give an update as to what you will be seeing throughout the community in terms of goals for the grant and areas where we would like assistance and involvement from residents.
Within the area of healthy food access, we will continue our work with the Healthy Happens Here program. This program works with small stores located within our food deserts to add fresh produce and healthy snacks to their inventory. PICH will also continue working with local restaurants as a part of our Active Menu Challenge. We are seeking restaurants to join our challenge and allow us to assist with promotion of healthy options on their menu. Within active living, we plan to work with a local school district and childcare facilities to implement policies concerning physical activity and ensuring that children are being provided physical activity daily. Our goal around tobacco and smoke free spaces includes assisting local organizations in implementing or creating a plan towards a tobacco free policy. Most importantly, we will continue our weekly education series and to promote community success stories.
There are many ways that you can become involved with Activate Allen County. If you are interested in joining a task force or committee, there are many opportunities within the Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force, Maternal and Infant Task Force, Allen County Food Council, or Tobacco Coalition. You can support our programs by looking for our logo in Activate Approved restaurants or purchase fresh produce from one of the Healthy Happens Here member stores. At work, talk to your co-workers and managers about the importance of wellness in the workplace and reach out to our office as needed to assist with conversations about healthy workplace policies.
Activate Allen County exists to make Allen County a healthier place to live, work and play. Without the support of many partners and community members, it would not be possible to accomplish this important work. Please feel free to call our office at 419-221-5025 with comments, questions or for information on how you can get involved. We are looking forward to a great year and continued progress in creating an environment of health and wellness in Allen County!
